Heswall Arts Festival 2012

The dates for the 2012 Festival have been announced and it will take place from:

13th to the 27th October 2012.

Activities centred around and about Heswall in many different venues begin on Saturday 13th October and will run for two weeks until the closing performance on Saturday 27th October.

‘With These Hands’

Exhibition curated by Susan Brown.

Venue: Heswall Library, Telegraph Road. Heswall. Wirral. CH60 0AF

9am-5pm (plus Saturdays).

Susan Brown has curated this show with an eclectic mix of amazing artwork from the members of ‘With These Hands’ networking group (founded by Alison Bailey Smith).

This is group of visual creative folks based in Wirral, living or working anywhere on the peninsula. The group has spawned many friendships and collaborations, exhibitions and projects between artists including those with international reputations.

There will be a competition to name three sculptures and also a poetry reading.

An exciting variety of work by some of the region’s top artists and makers will be on display.

The fair is part of the Heswall Arts Festival and will be a unique opportunity to see and purchase from established makers and young graduates in art and design.

You will be able to see and buy beautiful jewellery, textiles, ceramics, photography and art.

The venue is in the centre of Heswall, close to the bus station.

Art exhibitions during the festival 

Exhibition of Fine Art

David Brown, Rob Symington and Susan Brown

Venue: Heswall Library, Telegraph Road

Dates: 15th to 21st October

Opening Times: Library opening times, note closed Sunday and Wednesday

Information – Rob Symington‘s artistic practice has been, and is concerned with a wide range of subject areas and methods. Some is descriptive and representational, and some is intuitive,responsive and concerned with the process of its making. Work includes everything from colour-field abstraction to intricate representative paintings, drawings and etchings. A Liverpool Fine Art graduate he was resident artists at Chester Zoo, has been twice awarded Wildlife Artists of the Year at the Mall Galleries London and helps to create the National Wildlife Art Exhibition on the Wirral.


David Brown is a figurative painter with a great interest in portraiture. He also paints

townscapes often involving fairly basic elements such as bus stops proving that there are good images everywhere A member, Past President and Secretary of The Liver Sketching Club, he is also Secretary of The Wirral Society of Arts. His work is in collections in the U.K. as well as many other countries.


Susan Brown works mainly in oil in a traditional style. Living on a coastline means that beach scenes and depictions of water feature quite a lot in her work, but working in the Northwest also affords opportunities to reflect rural scenes and cityscapes. She has work in collections around the world, in many private homes and has frequent exhibitions of her work.

‘Chasing the Light’

Information: Awarded the Photographic prize at this year’s Wirral Open Exhibition at the Williamson Art Gallery Marianthi is a Hoylake-based photographer who specialises primarily in local seascapes. Drawing inspiration from the beauty of the North West coast her work includes both colour and striking monochromatic images. www.openspaceimages.com

Exhibition of Paintings by Karen Gilbert

Venue: Gill’s Kitchen 206 Telegraph Road, CH60 0AL

Dates: 15th to 29th October

Opening Times: Mon – Sun 9 – 5pm

Information: Karen’s paintings create an illusion of reality; representation, but in a non-traditional way. An awareness that the work is not of mixed media but acrylic paint confuses the senses, encouraging the viewers to question their perception, to challenge and re-evaluate.Since 2005 she has exhibited across North West England and North Wales, as well as working with Aintree Hospitals Trust developing site specific works appropriate to the needs of a variety of people in the hospital environment.

Exhibition of Paintings by David Tolley

Venue: Maxwell Hodge Solicitors, 234 Telegraph Road CH60 0AL

Dates: 15th to 29th October

Opening Times: 10 – 4 Monday to Friday

Information: In recent years while dividing his time between Majorca and England David Tolley has turned his considerable artistic talents exclusively to painting. His work is represented in collections in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland, the U.K and the USA. Originals and prints will be for sale.


Exhibition of Light

Venue: Cetra Gallery & Studio 50 Pensby Road CH60 7RE

Dates:15th – 26th October

Opening Times: Mon – Sat 10am – 5pm Late opening Thu 20th 5.30-8pm

‘SPICE’ Exhibition of latest contemporary textile work from ‘CONTEXT’
